Wheel of Fortune This Week (Sept. 14–18, 2026): All Five Bonus Puzzles, Every Winner and the $75,000 That Got Away

Sony put $215,000 of bonus-round cash on the stage this week and took $125,000 of it back. Add the Audi that sat unclaimed in Thursday's envelope and Season 44's premiere week starts to look less like a celebration than a collection.

Two of five solved. Both solves were the cheap envelopes. Every expensive one walked.

What were this week's bonus puzzles?

Both winners picked Food & Drink and both got out. The three who drew Person and What Are You Doing? did not. That is a five-night sample and nothing more, but it is the kind of thing Wheel Watchers notice. The running list carries forward on the nightly Wheel page.

Who won each night?

Friday was the biggest night and Thursday the smallest, which is backwards from how the two games actually felt to watch.

Four of the five champions were first-time players who never trailed after the third round, and only Thursday's game came down to under $2,000 between first and second. Wheel does not carry champions over, so every night started from scratch.

Thursday was also the closest game of the week. Cayden Gonzales, a multi-instrumentalist from Deshler, Nebraska, finished $1,803 behind Shepard at $17,948 and a trip to the Philippines, with Paula Rowland of Bay Shore, New York on $10,000.

Friday was the opposite shape. Lee Carrigan, a postal carrier from Rockton, Illinois, did not get on the board until the speed-up round, and Kim Fields-Pendleton of Rahway, New Jersey ended on zero.

Was two-for-five a bad week?

It is below the show's long-run rhythm, which historically lands nearer one solve in three than one in two — so on raw hit rate the week was fine. The problem was where the misses landed.

Sort the five envelopes by value and the result is a clean split: the two smallest were opened and the three largest were not. That is $125,000 in cash plus an Audi that stayed with Sony, against $90,000 paid out.

Envelopes are drawn at random and the contestant picks a category before seeing the prize, so there is no mechanism connecting the two. Five nights is small enough that a run like this means very little. It still made for a frustrating week to watch.

What happened with the IDEATING puzzle?

This was the week's story. David Shepard, an oncologist from Atlanta who has survived cancer himself, drew What Are You Doing? and the board showed I _ E _ T I N G.

He tried ICE EATING. Then IRKING. The answer was IDEATING, and the envelope held an Audi Q3.

Viewers were not quiet about it. TV Insider collected the reaction, which ran from "one of the worst puzzles ever" to accusations that the show had picked an obscure word to protect a car. Shepard still had the best night of his life on paper — $19,751 and a trip to Chicago — but it is the loss people remember.

For contrast, Wednesday's I'M PIVOTING sat in the same category with $75,000 attached, and earlier nights of the season show the category is usually a gift. The rest are filed in the nightly results section.

Did Fortune Frenzy replace the toss-ups?

It did, and this was the first full week of it. The old format opened with a $1,000 toss-up and a $2,000 toss-up, a maximum of $3,000 before round one.

Fortune Frenzy runs about 30 seconds of fast-revealing puzzles worth $1,000 apiece, five of them, so the ceiling is $5,000. Monday's premiere hit that ceiling. The money is swapped in, not added on top.

The theme changes nightly. This week ran through working out, football, Americana and, on Friday, September itself. It has already produced one tiebreaker, which the old two-toss-up structure never managed.

The themes themselves are worth tracking, because they telegraph the puzzles. Tuesday ran working out, Wednesday football, Thursday Americana and Friday September. Tuesday's set ended in a tie, which the show had to break.
