How to Qualify for the Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions: Wins Needed and Who Decides

Short answer: win five regular games and you are in; win four and you may be. Jeopardy.com's own tracker says any player who wins 5 or more games in Season 43 qualifies for the 2028 Tournament of Champions. Below five, the producers decide, and that is where most of the arguing happens.
| Regular-game wins | Status | Who decides |
|---|---|---|
| 5 or more | Qualified | The rule itself |
| 4 | Often invited, not promised | Producers |
| 3 or fewer | Only through a side route | Tournament result |
How many wins does it take to get into the Tournament of Champions?
Five. The tracker page on jeopardy.com lists the qualified players and adds one line under them: the players above have qualified for the 2027 Tournament of Champions, and a five-game winner from Season 43 earns a place in 2028.
The tournament runs a year behind the season that earns the seat. Games taped in Season 43 feed the 2028 field, not the 2027 one.
What happens to four-game winners?
They wait. Wikipedia's account of the tournament says a champion has needed at least four wins to be considered since the cycle that began with shows taped on Nov. 30, 2020 (it was three before that), and that total winnings break ties among players with the same number of wins.
That is the part the tracker does not promise. Five wins is a rule; four is a candidacy. Our reading of the two sources: a four-game winner is in a pool, and how far the pool stretches depends on how many five-game winners the season produced.
👉 Worked example: Rian Robertson won four games on Oct. 1–6 ($16,100, $9,801, $13,800 and $24,400, $64,101 in all). That is one win short of the automatic line, so he sits in the four-win pool rather than on the tracker.
Are there other ways in?
Yes. The tracker's 2027 list opens with Mina Kimes, shown with $1,000,000 for charity and a Celebrity Jeopardy! credit, not a regular-game streak. Wikipedia's entries for the celebrity, College Championship and Teachers tournaments each say the winner earns a Tournament of Champions place.
So the regular-season route is the one with the arithmetic. The other routes are won in a separate bracket.

How big is the field, and who skips the first round?
The Season 42 tournament, which finished in early 2026, had 21 contestants. The top three seeds — Scott Riccardi, Laura Faddah and Paolo Pasco — went straight to the semifinals, and the other 18 played six quarterfinal games. The six quarterfinal winners joined the three seeds.
Older write-ups still say the field is fifteen. That was the original format; the 21-player layout came in with Season 39.
Where are this season's players right now?
On the Jeopardy! tonight page, nobody in the current run is near five. Kim Kalnoki, who won on Wednesday, Oct. 14, and Ron Clarke before her each have one win, so each needs four more. Greg Monson's run ended at three.

FAQ
Do five wins guarantee an invitation? The tracker says five-game winners qualify. It does not list an exception.
Can a three-game winner play? Not through the regular-season route under the current four-win minimum, per Wikipedia. A side tournament win is the other way in.
Where do I check who has qualified? The tracker on jeopardy.com. Each night's result is filed in our results archive, and getting on the show is its own path: the audition process.
