The gist: Long Nguyen took the last seat in the Invitational final, and Drew Goins bet all but three dollars of his stack to try to stop him.

What was the Final Jeopardy answer on September 8?

The category was Writers. The clue described a man who won three Pulitzer Prizes in two different categories and called his Connecticut house "the house the bridge built."

The response is Who is Thornton Wilder? The bridge is The Bridge of San Luis Rey, the 1927 novel that paid for the place; the other two Pulitzers came from drama, for Our Town and The Skin of Our Teeth.

Only Long Nguyen had it. Goins answered "Who is Agee?" — James Agee did win a Pulitzer, but only one, and posthumously.

Who won, and why did second place matter so much?

Nguyen led with $15,800 to Goins's $12,200 and Farrell's $10,000. A $5,001 wager covered a doubling Goins exactly, which is the standard move and the correct one.

Goins was the one with the real decision. Down $3,600 with a semifinal seat on the line, he pushed nearly everything in and finished with three dollars.

👉 That is not recklessness — in a one-and-done semifinal, second place pays nothing you can spend. Farrell stood pat on $10,000 and finished ahead of him anyway.

How did the game go before Final?

It was tight for a long stretch. The Jeopardy! round ended $5,600–$4,600–$3,600, with six lead changes and four ties across the hour.

Nguyen's Double Jeopardy! swung it both ways. He doubled $7,200 to $14,400 on Maps & Globes, then gave $5,000 back on Opera two clues later.

Farrell's own Daily Double, a $1,000 bet on Poem Add A Letter, was correct but small. Three Daily Doubles in a game with nine triple stumpers meant a lot of money simply never left the board.

Coryat scores — the wager-free measure of who actually played better — came in at Nguyen $15,200, Goins $12,200, Farrell $9,600.
