What was the Final Jeopardy answer on September 7?

Category: Men of Religion. The clue leaned on a 1660 book that quoted Mary, Queen of Scots as saying she feared one man's prayers more than an army of men.

The Scottish reformer John Knox is the response. He spent his career opposing the Catholic queen, and Presbyterianism rather than Anglicanism took hold in Scotland because of it.

None of the three wrote it down. That made the wagering the whole story, and it is worth walking through if you have ever argued about the cover bet with someone at dinner.

Who won, and how did a $38 bet do it?

Amodio led by $5,600 and put down $8,001, the standard bet that covers a doubling opponent. He had every reason to trust himself there; his career Final Jeopardy record is better than two in three.

He went the other way. A tiny bet only wins if the leader is wrong, and on a clue this thin that was the better read of the room.

How did the rest of the game go?

He was the fastest hand early. Seven correct in the opening fifteen clues put him at $6,000 while Betts, who found the first Daily Double on the second clue of the night and missed, sat at zero.

He kept it up, running the etymology category five for five and closing the first round at $8,400. Amodio had $3,800, Betts $1,400.

Double Jeopardy! turned on two squares. Amodio hit his Daily Double for $6,200; He missed his and dropped $6,000, which is how a comfortable lead became a $5,600 deficit.

Does any of this change the syndicated championship?

No. This was an Invitational encore, and the syndicated title was not on the line.

Where that left the syndicated season: Matthew Riggle carried the championship into the Season 43 premiere on Sept. 14. He did not hold it long. Six games in, Season 43 has already had four different champions, and Jennifer Leavey took the title on Monday, Sept. 21 with a $20,000 all-in Final Jeopardy! wager.
